The Man

The Man

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. He was a frail child and used physical fitness programmes to improve his health, becoming a keen sportsman and later teaching boxing and self- defence in the UK.

During his internment in the Isle of Man during World War I he applied his system called ‘Contrology’ and refined this when he moved to New York in 1926, creating equipment and exercises to become a revolutionary in the impact on the world of fitness and well-being.

"Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit"
Joseph Pilates
